Eph. 3:14-21, “For this reason I bow my knees before the Father …”
It has been my privilege to pray this prayer regularly and repeatedly for our church over these 50 days. What a beautiful prayer it is, from someone who knew by experience the One to whom they prayed.
This prayer is fully Trinitarian. It starts with the glory of the Father of the human family. It promises us strength by the fullness of God which the Holy Spirit provides. And although the Apostle can scarcely find the words, it speaks in mind-blowing terms of the love of Christ.
This prayer beautifully pictures Christ’s love for us in four dimensions: breadth, length, height and depth. This imagery was chosen in part because, just as we cannot picture four dimensions, the Apostle is describing something “that surpasses knowledge” and is “far more than all we can ask or imagine.” But nonetheless, this prayer invites us to try and imagine that multi-dimensional love!
This prayer speaks to us as a church as an organic entity, with Christ as our life-source. As I have prayed this for our church, I have prayed for us as an entity, for our collective “inner being”. I have prayed that we, as one church, would have the power, knowledge and love that is spoken of so wondrously here. I have prayed that we as a church “may be filled with all the fullness of God.”
Thank you for journeying as a church through these 50 Days of Prayer. As we go forward, rooted and grounded in love, may our triune God bring much fruit from our united prayers.
Pray this prayer with me now, and perhaps again in the days to come:
We bow our knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. We pray that, according to the riches of Your glory, You may grant that Fellowship Church may be strengthened in our inner being with power through Your Spirit and that Christ may dwell in our hearts through faith, as we are being rooted and grounded in love. We pray that we may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that Fellowship Church may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Now to Him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
