1 Tim. 2:1-4, “I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. This is right and acceptable before God our Savior, who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”

I will admit that I am not very consistent about praying for our governing officials. God give me faith to do so!  I wish the Apostle Paul had given us a sample prayer for someone like the emperor, so we could learn how to pray for a really bad emperor.  But right now, I am finding it easier to pray for our provincial and federal leaders, as we prepare to go through one and likely two elections, and as they respond to the USA’s economic threats.  I am finding much more to pray for.

I recall, though, several years ago someone asked me if I pray for the president of the US. “Nope, not my leader,” I replied. Now, however, I realize I must pray for the current US president.  And since Paul gave us four types of prayers we can pray for leaders, I am sure I can, must and will find much to pray for what is happening in Washington right now.

So we pray,
Holy God, Sovereign over all the rulers of the nations, we thank you that we live in a free country. Please grant us grace to continue to live a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. We thank you that we have freedom to share our faith openly, and pray that you would speak through our words and deeds to that others would come to the saving knowledge of the truth. Please help our Canadian leaders to respond wisely to threats against our country. Please guide the US leaders to abide by laws that are there to protect all people, not just some people.  Amen.
