3 John 2, “Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, just as it is well with your soul.”

I just love this little prayer, don’t you? It is so simple and so heartfelt, you could pray it right now for someone you love. In fact, why don’t you do that now?

Tradition tells us that the Apostle John wrote this letter as an old man to Gaius, perhaps the same Gaius who had accompanied the Apostle Paul on some of his preaching trips.  Now John and Gaius were friends, dear friends in Christ. John ends this short letter with a heartfelt “I have much to write to you, but I would rather not write with pen and ink; instead I hope to see you soon, and we will talk together face to face.”  We can all relate to this kind of friendship, vibrant even though separated by the miles.  Who comes to your mind as you read this?

On this Valentine’s Day, spend a bit of time praying for someone dear to you, using John’s simple words to guide you: “Father God, I pray that all may go well with ___________ and that they may be in good health, and that all would be well with their soul.” Amen.
