Mt. 6:3-4, “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

To pray this prayer and really mean it – that would be a great thing. How many times have we prayed it?  The words roll out so fast when we recite it in church; do we know what we have just prayed? Are we willing to do what is necessary and take the time to discern the will of God, let alone participate in its coming on earth?

Praying sincerely that the will of God would come on earth could have implications for me personally. What person of faith in the Bible never had the course of their life changed by seeking God’s will? Think of Moses, Deborah, Nehemiah, Esther, Mary, Simon Peter, Philip, or Timothy, to name a few. If we pray for God’s will to come on earth, are we willing to answer the subsequent call?

Praying sincerely that the will of God would come on earth may also mean that I have to let go of something.  How many times does our tight hold on things get in the way of God’s will being done? A young man came to Jesus asking, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” That’s a pretty good prayer, yet upon receiving Jesus’ reply, he went away grieving (Mt. 19:22).

In week 4 of these 50 Days of Prayer for Fellowship Church, I hope that together we can take the time to pray and discern the implications of this great prayer that Jesus taught us, humbly seeking the will of God for our church.

So we pray,
‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’
Amen.

PS - no blog post tomorrow. We look forward to worshipping together!
